The Tamiya story
1940's
  • 1946: TAMIYA INC., a saw mill/lumber factory in Shizuoka, was founded from Yoshio Tamiya.
  • 1947: A wooden model department was organized within the lumber company.
1950's
  • 1953: Sawmill was closed and TAMIYA became a specialized wooden model kit maker.
1960's
  • 1960: TAMIYA began producing plastic model kits.
  • 1968: TAMIYA became the first Japanese model kit manufacturer to exhibit at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, Germany and started the 1/35 scale Military Miniatur Series.
1970's
  • 1976: TAMIYA released the 1/12 scale electric powered RC Porsche 934 Turbo that triggered radio control cars´ booming popularity.
  • 1977: The 1/24 scale Sports Car Series was started. And Mr. Shunsaku Tamiya, son of the founder, became the President and Chief Executive for TAMIYA Plastic Model Co.
1980's
  • 1981: The 1/12 scale Motorcyle Series was started.
  • 1984: Mr. Shunsaku Tamiya became the President and Chief Executive for TAMIYA INC.
  • 1987: 1/32 scale motorized „Racing Mini 4WD“cars, which were first introduced in the previous year, recorded a total production quantity exceeding 10 million units.
  • 1988: Founder Mr. Yoshio Tamiya, died at the age of 83.
  • 1989: TAMIYA EUROPE GMBH was established in Germany.
1990's
  • 1992: Start of the TAMIYA Euro Cup race series
  • 1993: TAMIYA starts with the first kit of a scale 1/14 scale RC truck. Today, TAMIYA is the global market leader in this segment.
  • 1994/1995: TAMIYA Philippines INC. was established and started model kit production.
  • 1996: The Tamiya Kakegawa R/C Circuit was opened in Kakagawa-City, Shizuoka, Japan.
  • 1997: With the TAMIYA FIGHTER-CUP, the RC racing serie that have successfully nurtured the next generation and given fans the opportunity to practise their „high-speed“ hobby. With up to 3,000 participants each year, the FIGHTER- CUP is the world’s largest youth racing series for RC cars.
2000's
  • 2006: TAMIYA celebrated its 30th anniversary of making RC vehicles.
2010's
  • 2012: In the summer TAMIYA won for the third time in a row and for the fifth time since 2002 the World Touring Car Championship on a scale of 1/10 and also celebrates countless successes in other racing series for years.
  • 2012: TAMIYA celebrated its 40th anniversary of making RC vehicles.

Production

TAMIYA laid the foundation stone in the Philippines for a state of-the-art production plant, which sets new standards. The TAMIYA models are manufactured at the site which currently covers an area of 4 hectares. Here highly qualified staff work in the fields of product development, 3D model design, mould construction, as well as production and quality control. In addition to this, the site also has its own printing plant for all TAMIYA packaging, construction guides and other printed materials. As it has its own production plant, TAMIYA is able to produce products to the highest quality standard.
